When bitten by a snake, you should do these things first

What to Do If You Get Bitten by a Snake

If you are bitten by a snake, stay calm and follow these steps to reduce the risk of poisoning and complications:

1. Stay Calm and Limit Movement

  • Do not panic, as increased heart rate can spread the venom faster.
  • Keep the bitten area still and ideally positioned lower than the heart.

2. Call Emergency Services Immediately

  • Dial 911 (or your local emergency number) and get medical help as soon as possible.
  • If someone is with you, ask them to call for help and assist you in getting to a hospital.

3. Perform Proper First Aid

Clean the wound gently with soap and water.
Apply a loose bandage if you suspect a venomous snakebite (but do not wrap too tightly).
Stay as still as possible, especially the affected limb.

🚫 Avoid These Mistakes:
Do not use a tourniquet, as it may cause tissue damage.
Do not cut the wound or suck out the venom, as this can lead to infection.
Do not drink alcohol or caffeine, as they can increase heart rate.
Do not apply ice or tobacco, as they can worsen the situation.

4. Identify the Snake If Possible

If it is safe to do so, try to remember the snake’s appearance or take a photo to help doctors identify the species and provide the correct treatment.

🚑 Important: Even if you have no immediate symptoms, go to the hospital as some venomous bites may cause delayed but life-threatening reactions.
