
11 basic survival skills to help you escape risky situations
These survival skills are very important and necessary to help you get through emergency situations, or situations that require knowledge of survival skills when going out in nature.
1) How to survive a waterfall
Take a deep breath and prepare yourself for the rapids. Try to stay in control of the situation before you enter the water.
Wrap one arm around your head and use your other hand to cover your nose with your elbow to prevent shock. Then tense your muscles, press your legs and feet together, and close your mouth and eyes.
Try to swim away from the rapids as soon as you hit the water, and swim even if you are floating.
2) How to survive falling into rapids
First you need to grab whatever you can find around you, as soon as possible, to prevent being pulled into more dangerous territory.
Even if the water is shallow, you should not stand up straight to go to the shore, because you may be pulled under again by the current. It is best to try to swim to the nearest shore.
3) How to get out of quicksand
First, put your weight on your right leg. Then, swing your left leg to slowly bring it up to the surface, placing your left knee on the sand in a kneeling position.
Next, shift your weight onto your left leg, swing your right leg forward until you have your right leg up in a kneeling position, and move off the sand.
4) Find and store underground water for drinking
By using water seepage mechanisms, you can find and store water sources for drinking. This method is suitable for forested areas. First, you need to find an area with dark and moist soil, which is where the underground water source is. Then, dig a hole about 60cm wide and about 30cm deep, and line the sides and bottom of the hole with stones to prevent dirt from mixing with fresh water.
5) How to remove fog from car windows
Use half of a potato to rub the inside of your car's windshield. Use the flesh to ensure the starch is evenly distributed across the glass.
Once the starch dries, your windows will no longer absorb the fog.
6) How to Steam Food Naturally
Steaming food is the best way to ensure that the essential nutrients in the food are retained. The inner chambers of the bamboo can be used to steam food. You have to make a hole connecting the bamboo chambers together. Place water in the bottom chamber and food in the top chamber. Steam will be created in the middle chamber to cook your food.
7) How to make soap naturally
The main ingredients to make soap are oil and lye. Oil can be obtained from animal fat or fish oil. Lye can be obtained from the ashes of burnt wood or seaweed. You need to wash the ashes in water and filter with oil. Then, boil to evaporate the liquid, and let it cool before using.
8) How to build a toilet
First, dig a hole about 1.2m deep and 4m wide. Use wood, soil and rocks to build horizontal and vertical edges.
The opening should be left with a gap for use and covered with a lid. Cover the logs with wood ash to seal the gaps to keep flies away.
Note: Do not use disinfectants in the toilet, as it will kill the beneficial bacteria that decompose waste, and make them smell very quickly. In addition, you should replace the lid regularly.
9) How to tie 4 types of knots you must know
- Tightening knot, can be adjusted many times, suitable for tents.
- Half knot: suitable for tying with other ropes
- Wooden knot: for lifting or pulling heavy objects
- Bow knot: Used when rowing or around the waist for rescue purposes.
10) How to make a noose trap for hunting wild animals
Use 2 wooden posts to stick into the ground, make a groove on the 2 posts. Fix a horizontal wooden branch and tie it tightly with a rope. Next, you tie a noose in the form of a bowstring knot (can be from a tree branch) to fix the horizontal bar, and a tight running knot hanging down to the ground to catch wild animals. This trap is suitable for small animals such as rabbits and foxes.
11) How to reflect heat to keep the body warm
Creating a heat reflector close to the fire will help direct the heat back towards you and push the smoke upward.
Sit with a rock or tree behind the fire to use as a heat reflector. This will help warm your back as the rock or tree acts as a second heat reflector.
If there are no trees or rocks, you can make a wooden board behind you to help the fire transfer heat towards you.
