5 Instant and Effective Ways to Clean Your Home with Lemons – From the Bathroom to the Baking Tray

Lemons aren’t just a familiar kitchen ingredient—they're also a natural, affordable, and powerful cleaning solution that leaves your home smelling fresh with a citrusy scent.

Packed with vitamin C, lemons don’t just boost your immune system—they also disinfect and deodorize thanks to citric acid, a strong natural cleaner. If you’ve never tried cleaning with lemons before, now’s the perfect time to start.

On Instagram, popular cleaning blogger @juliahunt shared 5 areas in her home where she regularly uses lemons to clean. Let’s explore this safe, effective, and non-toxic cleaning method:

1. Clean Kitchen Sink and Faucets

After cooking, the kitchen sink often becomes greasy and bacteria-prone. Julia suggests cutting a lemon in half, sprinkling some baking soda on the cut side, and scrubbing around the sink and faucet.

This combo works wonders: the lemon’s acidity and baking soda’s mild abrasiveness help remove stubborn stains and disinfect surfaces effectively.

2. Remove Limescale in the Bathroom Sink

If you live in a hard water area, your sink and faucets are likely to have white limescale buildup from calcium and magnesium. The citric acid in lemons breaks down this buildup quickly. Use the same method as above—lemon and baking soda—to scrub the affected areas thoroughly.

3. Clean Shower Glass or Fabric Curtains

Soap scum and water stains on shower glass can be easily cleaned using the lemon and baking soda mixture. After scrubbing, rinse with clean water and dry with a squeegee to prevent new watermarks.

For fabric shower curtains, soak them in warm water for 20 minutes, then rub moldy spots with lemon to remove mildew. Rinse and repeat if needed.

4. Clean Wooden Cutting Boards

Lemons are also great for cleaning wooden cutting boards. Sprinkle coarse salt over the board, then scrub with half a lemon to remove bacteria and stains. After cleaning, Julia recommends applying a layer of coconut oil to moisturize and prevent the wood from cracking.

5. Deodorize and Clean the Oven

Place a tray of water with a few lemon slices in the oven, set it to 200°C (392°F), and let it run for 20 minutes. The steam will loosen up built-up grease and grime.

Then, use half a lemon with baking soda to scrub away remaining stains—quick, effective, and non-toxic.
