Don't throw away cucumber peels!
In reality, cucumber peels can be used for various purposes instead of being discarded.
Most people peel cucumbers before eating them to ensure cleanliness and avoid ingesting dirt or pesticides. The discarded peels usually end up in the trash. However, throwing away cucumber peels is a waste, as they can be repurposed for several useful household tasks.
1. Use Cucumber Peels as Fertilizer for Plants
Both the peels and the inner flesh of cucumbers can be used as organic fertilizer for houseplants. These parts contain essential vitamins and minerals that enrich the soil and support plant growth.
- Chop the cucumber peels and place them in a plastic bottle or compost bin.
- Add a little brown sugar and clean water (or rice water).
- Stir well until the sugar dissolves and loosely cover the bottle/bin lid (don’t seal it tightly).
- After about two months, the fermented mixture can be diluted with water and used to fertilize plants.
This cucumber-based compost helps balance soil pH and adds nutrients to plants.
Alternatively, you can bury the peels directly into the soil and wait for them to decompose naturally, creating nutrient-rich soil for planting.
2. Repel Insects with Cucumber Peels
While cucumber peels have a fresh, pleasant scent for humans, they are repulsive to pests. You can place cucumber peels around your garden to keep away:
- Ants
- Wasps
- Cockroaches
- Mice
Simply scatter cucumber peels in areas where pests frequently appear, and they will stay away.
3. Remove Ink Stains from Furniture
If you have children, ink stains on furniture and walls are unavoidable. To remove them:
- Take a cucumber peel and rub it over the stain multiple times.
- Wipe with a clean cloth, and the ink will gradually disappear.
4. Clean Mirrors with Cucumber Peels
Bathroom mirrors often become foggy due to steam, leaving calcium deposits and water stains.
- Rub cucumber peels on the mirror surface.
- The natural compounds in cucumber will help break down stains, restoring the mirror’s clarity and shine.
5. Polish Leather Shoes with Cucumber Peels
You can buff your leather shoes using cucumber peels:
- Take a piece of peel and rub it over the surface of the shoe.
- The natural oils and compounds in cucumber create a protective coating, making your shoes shinier.
6. Clean Stainless Steel Items with Cucumber Peels
Household stainless steel items like faucets, kitchen sinks, or utensils can become dull and dirty over time.
- Use cucumber peels to rub directly onto stainless steel surfaces.
- Rinse with clean water, and you’ll notice stubborn stains disappear, leaving a sparkling finish.
Instead of throwing cucumber peels away, try these simple household tricks to reduce waste and maximize their benefits!
