What is the disease of waking up with a swollen upper lip? Causes and treatment

Waking Up With a Swollen Upper Lip: What You Should Know

  • Waking up with a swollen upper lip can be a warning sign of various health conditions.

  • This condition often becomes chronic and recurs frequently, leading to lip damage and aesthetic concerns.

  • Understanding the specific cause is the best way to determine the right treatment.

What Disease Causes a Swollen Upper Lip Upon Waking?

  • Swollen upper lip is common and can occur in anyone — children, adults, pregnant women, etc.

  • Depending on the cause, swelling may last a few hours, several days, or recur in cycles.

  • It can signal dangerous conditions and may require medical care.

  • One possible cause is Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome (granulomatous cheilitis), a chronic condition that may have genetic links.

  • The upper lip may become dry, reddish-brown, cracked, painful, and accompanied by fever.

  • While there is no cure, this syndrome rarely causes serious complications, and most causes of swollen lips can be identified and treated easily.

Common Causes

1️⃣ Lip swelling due to allergic reaction

  • Caused by weather, food, medications, insect bites/stings.

  • May include:

    • Burning sensation in the mouth

    • Itching around/in the mouth

    • Rash or hives

  • Medication allergies (e.g., antibiotics) can trigger swelling, hives, coughing, wheezing, and angioedema.

  • Severe allergic reactions can cause anaphylactic shock with chest tightness, swelling of lips, tongue, and bronchial tubes, leading to breathing difficulties — immediate hospital care is crucial.

2️⃣ Chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives)

  • A complex allergic condition with unknown cause.

  • Harder to diagnose and treat without identifying the trigger.

  • If untreated, it may cause recurrent swelling, dermatitis, infection, angioedema, or anaphylaxis.

3️⃣ Skin inflammation or infection

  • Boils or cystic acne near the lips can cause swelling.

  • Herpes infections can cause overnight lip swelling.

  • Cellulitis on the lips is serious and requires medical care.

4️⃣ Muscle and nerve issues

  • Pressure on facial muscles or nerves during sleep may cause swelling.

  • Musicians who play wind instruments can develop swollen lips due to overuse; rest usually helps.

5️⃣ Dental problems

  • Braces, gum infections, wisdom teeth, or cavities can cause lip swelling.

  • See a dentist for proper treatment.

6️⃣ Injury

  • Biting or trauma during sleep may cause temporary swelling.

  • Usually heals on its own if there’s no further irritation or infection.

7️⃣ Other causes

  • Rarely, swollen lips may signal serious conditions like:

    • Lip cancer (more often affects the lower lip)

    • Lip cyst (causes one-sided swelling, pain, possible pus)

    • Stroke (swelling with drooling, speech difficulty)

When to See a Doctor

  • Seek immediate medical care if:

    • Swelling is accompanied by breathing trouble, wheezing, or swelling of mouth, tongue, or bronchial tubes.

    • Painful cystic acne, facial muscle spasms, or difficulty opening mouth/eating.

    • Swelling lasts over 24 hours without improvement.

    • Signs of anaphylaxis or stroke — call emergency services immediately.

How to Reduce Lip Swelling at Home

  • For mild cases without dangerous signs:

    • Apply a cold compress (wrap ice in a cloth, don’t apply ice directly).

    • Use chilled black tea bags on the lips.

    • Apply honey for its antibacterial and healing properties (leave on for 10–15 minutes, repeat during the day).

  • Keep lips moisturized and use lip sunscreen to prevent damage.

Note: These remedies provide temporary relief. Swelling can recur, especially if due to underlying conditions. Treating the root cause is essential to prevent complications like infection or permanent damage.
