Your Burps Might Be Saying More About Your Health Than You Think

What Your Burps Can Reveal About Your Health

While most burping is perfectly normal, it can sometimes signal an underlying issue. According to gastroenterologist Dr. Dan Sadowski, burping is the body’s way of releasing excess air from the stomach through the esophagus and out of the mouth.

A common misconception is that burping comes from gas produced during digestion. In reality, most of the gas you burp is simply swallowed air, which happens while eating or drinking.

Here are some common causes of excessive burping:

Chewing gum frequently

Chewing gum can cause you to swallow air with each chew, leading to more burping. This type of burping is called supragastric belching. Another type, gastric belching, occurs when air is released from the stomach and can be triggered by alcohol, fatty foods, chocolate, or peppermint.

Drinking carbonated beverages

Soda, sparkling water, and beer contain carbonation that adds gas to the stomach, increasing the likelihood of burping. Drinking these beverages through a straw can make the problem worse by introducing even more air.

Eating too quickly

Eating fast can cause you to swallow more air. Drinking while eating may also increase air intake, which can lead to frequent burping.

Anxiety

People with anxiety often breathe more rapidly and shallowly, which can lead to swallowing extra air. This can result in frequent supragastric belching.

Indigestion (dyspepsia)

Indigestion can cause burping along with symptoms such as stomach pain, bloating, nausea, or feeling full quickly. It may be triggered by fatty or acidic foods, smoking, or certain medications.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

Frequent burping combined with symptoms such as heartburn, chest pain, difficulty swallowing, or regurgitation may indicate GERD. This occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus.

H. pylori infection

The bacterium Helicobacter pylori can infect the stomach and lead to ulcers. Symptoms may include frequent burping, stomach pain, nausea, bloating, and unexplained weight loss.

The bottom line
Most burping is harmless. However, if excessive burping occurs with symptoms such as unexplained weight loss, vomiting, difficulty swallowing, bleeding, or severe abdominal pain, it’s important to seek medical attention.
