Sh.ock: Bride Ends Wedding After 7-Year Long-Distance Relationship Over Mother-in-Law's Speech
Recently, a video capturing a wedding in Jiangsu Province, China, went viral, showing the bride removing her wedding dress and calling off the wedding mid-ceremony.
According to Sohu, the couple, Mi An and Jiang Long, met in high school. After high school, they maintained a long-distance relationship for six years, meeting only a few times each year, but they remained understanding and supportive of each other. After seven years of dating, they finally decided to solidify their relationship with a wedding.
During wedding discussions, the bride’s parents requested a house and car as part of the bride price, to be given to their daughter and son-in-law as a dowry. However, the groom’s parents declined, saying, "Their demands are too high, and our family can’t afford such a large sum." Mi An, understanding her fiancé’s family situation, asked her parents to drop the request, saying, "We’ve been together for ten years now. I don’t want money to cause problems between our families."
At first, her parents disagreed, seeing this as a sign of disrespect from the groom’s family. Eventually, they reluctantly agreed, moved by their daughter’s distress.
However, on the wedding day, it was Mi An herself who called off the ceremony.
During the speeches, Jiang Long's mother praised her son extensively, going as far as to boast, "My son is so talented and handsome, and he’s getting married without us having to spend a cent." As she finished, guests murmured in shock, while Mi An’s parents looked down, visibly distressed. At that moment, Mi An took the microphone, declared the wedding off, and took off her dress in front of everyone, handing it back to the groom’s family.
Jiang Long’s mother rushed to stop her, but Mi An, crying, said, "I didn’t waive the bride price because your son is capable, or because I couldn’t marry anyone else. I thought our long years together deserved respect. I convinced my parents, yet here you are, embarrassing them with such a statement."
Mi An described her mother-in-law's words as "the final straw." She felt humiliated, and her family’s respect had been disregarded. "Our family didn’t ask for a bride price out of consideration for yours. I had to convince my parents, and I’ve wronged them," she added.
With that, Mi An left the ceremony, ignoring everyone’s pleas.
The video stirred strong reactions online, with many applauding her decisive stance, as they felt this incident foreshadowed a troubled marriage in which neither the groom nor his family truly respected the bride or her family. As Mi An walked out, the groom did little to stop her, even taking out his phone to record the incident.
"With a mother-in-law like that, leaving was the right choice," wrote one commenter. "If it were me, I’d have done the same thing. That woman completely disrespected her, even saying that in front of her parents, disregarding all they’d done for her."
Many commenters also noted that such situations aren’t uncommon, especially when women are introduced to their boyfriend’s families. "Some mothers treat their sons as if they’re gifts to the world and believe any woman would be lucky to marry them. Such attitudes are outdated," one netizen commented.
Others pointed out that in modern times, men and women face equal responsibilities; both work, earn, and contribute to building a family. The mother-in-law’s dismissive attitude toward the bride and her family was what infuriated many the most.
