World-renowned longevity researcher Dan Buettner has shared the surprisingly simple daily diet he follows—one that has delivered remarkable results, according to the UK’s Daily Mail.
Buettner, a National Geographic Fellow and bestselling author who has spent decades traveling to the world’s longest-lived communities, says many of his personal health secrets come down to his eating habits.
Speaking to his 795,000 Instagram followers, Dan, 64, said his doctor once told him he was “the healthiest patient” he had ever seen, attributing it largely to a predominantly plant-based diet.
While many social media influencers promote protein powders and expensive supplements, Dan insists the key to longevity begins with something far more humble: a bowl of Sardinian minestrone soup.
“Every morning I start my day with a bowl of Sardinian minestrone—a vegetable soup with beans. I drizzle a little olive oil on top and add an avocado. It keeps me full for a long time,” he explained.
Fans quickly agreed, with one commenting that minestrone is their favorite dish and incredibly easy to make.
For lunch, Dan doesn’t follow a strict diet. Instead, he eats whatever fruit appeals to him that day.
“I usually allow myself as much fruit as I want, and I eat what I feel like eating that day—because that helps me keep eating it,” he said in a recent video that garnered 150,000 views.
What Is Minestrone Soup?
Minestrone is a traditional Italian dish dating back to ancient Roman times. It was originally made from whatever vegetables were available and typically simmered for hours to develop a rich, savory flavor.
In the mountainous regions of Sardinia, however, minestrone is more than just a warming, inexpensive meal. Families have eaten variations of it daily for centuries, combining beans, vegetables, and grains in ways that modern nutrition science now recognizes as a “blueprint” for exceptional health.
Dan’s extensive research in Blue Zones around the world shows that diets rich in legumes, leafy greens, and unrefined carbohydrates are closely linked to lower rates of chronic disease, reduced inflammation, and significantly longer lifespans.
He also warns that many of these healthy eating traditions are fading as Western fast-food culture spreads. Preserving meals that have supported healthy communities for generations, he says, is more important than ever.
One viewer praised his gentle, accessible approach, calling his philosophy “a powerful reminder that longevity isn’t built on extremes,” but on repeatable habits, fresh foods, and “meaningful connections.”
Despite being a global advocate for health and longevity, Dan cheerfully admits he eats out every evening—because he believes human connection matters just as much as nutrition.
“I eat mostly whole, plant-based foods, but I also know that social connection is part of the formula for living to 100,” he explained.

That said, not everyone finds it easy, as some noted it’s “very hard” to find healthy vegan options on restaurant menus where they live.
For Dan, the recipe for a long, healthy life has nothing to do with expensive gadgets or extreme diets—it’s about balance between nutrition, habits, and human connection.
“I eat well, I stay connected, and I feel pretty good,” he told his followers.
