THE BIKER WHO WAITED OUTSIDE
When biker Marcus stopped at a late-night store, a fake robbery and a terrified clerk plunged him into a dangerous conspiracy involving a hidden memory card.
The chair was still warm.
That was the first thing Daniel noticed.
He had only stopped at the roadside diner because the rain had become too heavy to see clearly through his helmet visor. It was almost midnight, and the small diner beside the highway was nearly empty. Daniel was thirty-six, tall and broad-shouldered, with a muscular build, short thick black hair, a strong square jaw, deep brown eyes, and a small vertical scar beneath his right eyebrow. His weathered black leather jacket, dark gray shirt, black jeans, and heavy motorcycle boots made him look more like a man who belonged in a fight than a quiet roadside restaurant. But Daniel had never cared much about appearances. He rode alone, kept to himself, and had a habit of helping people whenever he noticed something was wrong.
He entered the diner, removed his gloves, and chose a booth near the window. The waitress placed a cup of coffee in front of him, and Daniel noticed an elderly man sitting alone at the counter. The man kept checking the clock every few minutes, occasionally looking toward the entrance as if he were waiting for someone who was very late.
Then the man suddenly stood up.
He left a small envelope on the counter.
And walked outside.
Daniel watched through the window as the old man crossed the parking lot and disappeared around the corner.
A minute passed.
Then five.
The waitress finally picked up the envelope.
Daniel noticed her expression change.
She opened it, read the first line, and immediately looked toward the door.
Daniel stood.
“Everything okay?”
The waitress quickly folded the letter.
“I don't know.”
Daniel looked at the empty chair.
The coffee was still steaming.
“Who was he waiting for?”
The waitress hesitated.
“His daughter.”
Daniel glanced toward the rain outside.
“Where is she?”
The waitress shook her head.
“That's the problem. She's been missing for three days.”
Daniel looked at the envelope.
Something about the situation felt wrong.
The waitress eventually showed him the letter.
It contained only one sentence.
“If I don't come back, give this to the person sitting in my chair.”
Daniel looked at the empty chair.
Then at the letter.
“What person?”
The waitress whispered:
“He didn't say.”
Daniel sat down in the old man's chair.
For several seconds, nothing happened.
Then his phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
A message appeared.
DON'T LET HER FATHER LEAVE THE DINER.
Daniel immediately looked toward the window.
The old man was standing across the street.
Watching him.
Daniel ran outside.
But the man was gone.
He searched the parking lot, the alley behind the diner, even the nearby gas station.
Nothing.
Then he heard a car engine.
A dark sedan accelerated away from the curb.
Daniel caught only a glimpse of the driver.
The same man who had been sitting at the counter earlier.
Daniel returned to the diner and found the waitress standing beside the old man's abandoned coat.
Something had fallen from its pocket.
A photograph.
Daniel picked it up.
It showed the old man standing beside a young woman.
His daughter.
But there was something strange about the photograph.
The young woman was standing beside a motorcycle.
Daniel recognized the motorcycle immediately.
It was the exact same model he owned.
His expression changed.
“Where did he get this?”
The waitress stared at the photograph.
“I don't know.”
Daniel turned it over.
There was a handwritten address.
His own workshop.
He stared at it in disbelief.
Someone had been watching him long before he ever entered the diner.
Daniel drove back to his workshop before sunrise.
The door was unlocked.
He immediately knew something was wrong.
Inside, nothing appeared stolen.
The tools were untouched.
The motorcycles were exactly where he'd left them.
But sitting on his workbench was another envelope.
Daniel opened it.
Inside was a photograph of the missing woman.
She was standing in front of his workshop.
Taken only two days earlier.
On the back, someone had written:
“She came here looking for you.”
Daniel froze.
He had never seen her before.
Or at least, he thought he hadn't.
Then he remembered something.
Three nights earlier, a woman had stood outside his workshop during a storm.
She had watched him repair a motorcycle through the window.
He'd assumed she was waiting for someone.
She had disappeared before he could speak to her.
Daniel suddenly understood.
She hadn't been waiting for someone.
She had been waiting for him.
His phone rang.
The unknown number again.
This time, Daniel answered.
A man's voice spoke quietly.
“You finally found the chair.”
Daniel's eyes hardened.
“Where is she?”
There was a pause.
Then the voice answered:
“Ask her father why he chose you.”
The call ended.
Daniel looked at the photograph again.
Then at the empty space inside his workshop where his father's old motorcycle used to stand.
His father had died years ago.
But Daniel suddenly remembered something his father had once told him:
Never trust a person who tells you a story without showing you what they were hiding.
Daniel picked up his motorcycle keys.
He didn't know who the missing woman was.
He didn't know why her father had chosen him.
And he definitely didn't know what connection his own family had to the disappearance.
But one thing was becoming clear.
The empty chair at the diner hadn't been waiting for a stranger.
It had been waiting for him.
