A recent study has shown that cockroach milk contains a lot of protein and that one day, insect milk will become a global food supplement.
Scientists have discovered that cockroach milk is rich in protein, fat and sugar, which is a very good source of nutrition for young children. Unlike other types of milk, cockroach milk is extracted from protein crystals in the intestines of cockroaches. This is the "milk" that cockroaches use to feed their young.
According to scientist Leonard Chavas - one of the participants in the study, the nutritional source of cockroach milk is 3 times higher than buffalo milk and 4 times higher than cow milk.
However, not all cockroaches can be used to make milk. Scientists have shown that cockroach milk is produced by the Diploptera punctate cockroach, which often lives in the Pacific Ocean and is a special species of cockroach that contains protein crystals. Moreover, this is a cockroach that gives birth - a rather strange form of reproduction in insects.
Like other live-bearing creatures, this particular cockroach feeds its larvae on a protein-rich liquid secreted from the mother cockroach's body. After testing, scientists discovered that this protein crystal is like a complete food.
"Cockroach milk contains protein, fat, sugar and essential amino acids," said Mr. Chavas.
However, 'milking' cockroaches is not an easy job. Because cockroach milk crystals are extracted from the cockroach's intestines, this is not the most efficient way to do it when the population is increasing. Therefore, scientists are continuing to research simpler methods to exploit this precious resource.
"Currently, we are trying to find an easier method to be able to produce cockroach milk in large quantities to supply the market," said Mr. Chavas.
