4 Clothes-Drying Mistakes That Can Harm Your Health—Common in Humid Weather

Clothes come into direct contact with your skin, so improper washing and drying methods can lead to skin issues, allergies, and infections. During prolonged humid weather, drying clothes becomes a challenge for families without a dryer. If not done correctly, clothes may take longer to dry, become breeding grounds for bacteria and mold, and even impact your health.

1. Drying Clothes Indoors with Poor Ventilation

Many people, especially those with small balconies, tend to dry clothes inside their homes or near windows. While this may not be a problem in the summer, during rainy or humid seasons, poor ventilation makes clothes take 4-5 days to fully dry.

Damp clothes create an ideal environment for bacteria and mold, leading to a musty odor and increasing the risk of skin conditions like eczema and dermatitis. People with sensitive skin are more prone to itchiness and acne when wearing such clothes.

2. Drying Clothes in Polluted or Dusty Areas

Some households near busy streets hang their laundry outside, believing that sunlight alone is enough to dry and sanitize their clothes. However, dust, smoke, and air pollutants can settle on the fabric, turning clothes into dust traps filled with harmful particles.

Wearing clothes dried in polluted areas can cause skin irritation and, over time, lead to respiratory issues such as allergic reactions and airway inflammation.

3. Delaying the Drying Process After Washing

Some people leave wet clothes in the washing machine for hours before hanging them up, either due to lack of time or simply forgetting. This is a big mistake.

A damp washing machine is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and mold, leading to secondary contamination of freshly washed clothes. To prevent this, always remove clothes immediately after washing and hang them up promptly.

4. Overlapping Clothes While Drying

When there's limited space or not enough hangers, some people layer multiple clothes on top of each other while drying. This slows down the drying process and traps moisture, creating a musty smell and encouraging bacteria growth in damp areas.

How to Dry Clothes Faster in Humid Weather

  • Wash clothes as soon as possible instead of waiting for a sunny day.
  • Wash in the morning to allow more drying time. Avoid washing at night when humidity levels are higher.
  • Use the highest spin setting in your washing machine to remove excess water.
  • Shake out clothes before hanging to reduce moisture retention.
  • Hang clothes upside down on hangers and maintain at least 5 cm (2 inches) between each item to allow airflow.
  • Store clothes only when fully dry to prevent mold from spreading in your wardrobe.

By following these simple yet effective drying techniques, you can keep your clothes fresh, dry, and bacteria-free, even in humid weather!
