Before drifting off to sleep, the body sometimes sends early warning signals of a potential stroke. Recognizing and responding promptly to these signs can help protect your health.

What Is a Stroke During Sleep?

A stroke that occurs during sleep (also known as a “wake-up stroke”) happens when the event begins while the person is asleep. Before going to bed, the individual may not notice any unusual symptoms. However, upon waking, the signs of a stroke have already become evident.

There are many possible causes of stroke during sleep. According to statistics, approximately 8–28% of stroke cases occur while a person is sleeping. What makes this particularly concerning is that the exact time of onset is often difficult to determine. As a result, patients may miss the “golden window” for emergency treatment, increasing the risk of permanent disability or death.

4 Warning Signs Before Sleep That May Signal a Stroke

1. Unusual Dizziness or Vertigo

If you suddenly feel intense spinning sensations, lightheadedness, or dizziness, it may indicate a sudden reduction in blood flow to the brain. This condition is often mistaken for a vestibular disorder, causing many people to underestimate its seriousness. However, if dizziness is accompanied by loss of balance or falls, the possibility of a stroke should be considered immediately.

2. Sleep Disturbances Accompanied by Persistent Headaches

Insomnia can sometimes result from stress or stimulant use. However, if sleep problems persist and are accompanied by headaches, nausea, fatigue, and lethargy, this could be an early warning sign of stroke. Chronic sleep disruption weakens the body and may increase the likelihood of a stroke occurring.

3. Severe Nighttime Headache and Nausea

A sudden, intense headache combined with nausea before bedtime should never be ignored. One possible cause is that the blood becomes thicker and more prone to clot formation, leading to blockage of blood vessels in the brain. This is one of the classic warning signs of an impending stroke, especially when it appears while the body is at rest.

4. Numbness or Weakness on One Side of the Body

If an arm or leg suddenly becomes numb, heavy, or difficult to move—particularly if it affects only one side of the body—it may be a warning sign of stroke. Muscle weakness and reduced sensation are often accompanied by other symptoms such as slurred speech, facial drooping, or blurred vision.

Important Note

In addition to the four signs listed above, sudden blurred vision, difficulty speaking, or trouble pronouncing words clearly are also dangerous warning signals. If any of these symptoms occur—especially at night—seek immediate medical attention to prevent serious consequences.
