If You Ever See Square Waves at the Beach, Stay Out of the Water... Here's Why
These Beautiful Square Waves Could Become Deadly in Minutes—Here's Why
At first glance, they look almost too perfect to be real.
Long, straight lines of waves intersect at nearly 90-degree angles, creating an astonishing checkerboard pattern across the ocean's surface. The phenomenon is known as square waves (or a cross sea), and while it is one of the ocean's most breathtaking sights, experts warn that it can also be one of its most dangerous.
What Are Square Waves?

Square waves occur when two different wave systems travel across the ocean from different directions and intersect. Instead of rolling in parallel toward the shore, the waves cross one another, forming a striking grid-like pattern that can sometimes be seen from cliffs, drones, or aircraft.
These conditions are relatively uncommon and usually develop when:
- A new weather system creates waves moving in a different direction from existing swells.
- Strong winds shift while older waves are still present.
- Ocean currents interact with waves traveling from separate storms.
The result is a mesmerizing pattern that has fascinated photographers and beachgoers around the world.
Why Are They So Dangerous?
Although square waves may appear calm from a distance, the water beneath them is anything but predictable.
When wave systems collide, they create conflicting currents that can make the sea extremely unstable. Swimmers, surfers, paddleboarders, and even experienced boaters may suddenly find themselves pulled in multiple directions at once.
These intersecting currents can lead to:
- Loss of balance for swimmers.
- Unexpected strong rip currents.
- Difficulty steering small boats.
- Higher chances of capsizing.
- Increased risk of drowning.
Because the ocean's movement becomes chaotic, escaping these currents can be far more difficult than in normal surf conditions.
Even Large Boats Can Struggle

Square waves aren't only dangerous for swimmers.
Boats crossing intersecting waves may experience violent rolling motions as waves strike from different angles simultaneously. This can reduce stability and make navigation much more difficult, especially for smaller vessels.
For this reason, mariners are trained to pay close attention to sea conditions whenever cross seas are present.
Where Are Square Waves Most Common?
One of the world's most famous locations for observing square waves is Île de Ré, an island off France's Atlantic coast.
From the island's lighthouse, visitors can sometimes safely watch the spectacular grid pattern from high above while remaining well away from the dangerous water below.
Square waves have also been reported in other coastal regions where multiple swells frequently meet, particularly after changing weather conditions.
Can You Predict Them?
Modern weather forecasting and ocean monitoring help identify conditions that may produce cross seas, but they can still develop quickly.
Signs that square waves may be present include:
- Two distinct sets of waves moving in different directions.
- A checkerboard appearance on the ocean surface.
- Choppy, confused water despite otherwise pleasant weather.
If lifeguards or local authorities advise people to stay out of the water, it's important to follow those warnings.
What Should You Do If You See Square Waves?

The safest choice is simple: admire them from land.
If you notice square waves while at the beach:
- Stay out of the water.
- Avoid taking boats into the affected area.
- Pay attention to warning flags and local safety notices.
- Move to higher ground if you want to photograph the phenomenon.
The unique pattern is best appreciated from a safe viewpoint rather than from the shoreline or in the water.
A Beautiful Reminder of Nature's Power
Square waves are a remarkable example of how the ocean can be both beautiful and unpredictable.
Their perfectly geometric appearance often attracts attention on social media, but beneath that stunning surface lies a complex interaction of waves and currents that can become hazardous in a matter of minutes.
The next time you encounter this rare natural phenomenon, enjoy the view—but remember that some of nature's most beautiful displays are also the ones that deserve the greatest respect.
