According to traditional medicine, lotus leaves have a slightly astringent, bitter taste and a cooling nature, and they act on the liver, spleen, and stomach meridians. This medicinal herb is also known as He Ye. Since ancient times, lotus leaves have been used as a remedy. They help strengthen the spleen and stomach, clear internal heat, raise vital energy, stop bleeding, and dissolve blood stasis. Lotus leaves are commonly used in cases of nosebleeds, vomiting blood, bloody stools, restlessness, thirst, abnormal uterine bleeding, edema caused by blood stagnation, and as a supportive aid for weight loss.

Research has also shown that lotus leaves help reduce liver damage, inhibit fat absorption in the body, speed up metabolism, support the treatment of lipid disorders, and promote energy expenditure.

Lotus leaves are beneficial in preventing high blood lipid levels, high blood pressure, and atherosclerosis.

They contain alkaloids and tannins that help increase insulin sensitivity, regulate blood sugar levels, support the treatment of type 2 diabetes, and reduce the risk of related complications.

Lotus leaves also contain flavonoid compounds that reduce fat absorption from food. Regularly drinking lotus leaf tea can help lower levels of “bad” cholesterol (LDL) in the body and prevent the accumulation of excess fat.

How to Prepare Dried Lotus Leaf Water

Lotus leaves used for medicinal purposes are usually harvested in autumn. This is when they are of the best quality, free from pests and damage. You can buy dried lotus leaves or dry fresh leaves at home for later use. With fresh leaves, remove the stems, cut them into smaller pieces, then sun-dry or air-dry them. Store the dried leaves in a sealed container and keep them in a cool, dry place.

When using, take a small amount of dried lotus leaves and rinse them clean. Place the leaves in a cup, add a few thin slices of ginger, then pour in boiling water. Let it steep for a few minutes, similar to brewing tea, and it is ready to drink.

Who Should Not Use Lotus Leaves

Although lotus leaves offer many health benefits, they are not suitable for everyone. Women during menstruation, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers should avoid using lotus leaves. Lotus leaves help remove blood stasis and promote smooth circulation of qi and blood. During menstruation, using lotus leaves may cause heavier bleeding or prolonged periods, leading to blood loss, anemia, fatigue, and weakness. Using lotus leaves during pregnancy or breastfeeding may negatively affect the health of both mother and baby.

People with a cold constitution, those with fever caused by cold-related illnesses, or those experiencing vomiting and diarrhea not related to heatstroke should also avoid lotus leaves, as their cooling properties may worsen these conditions.

Do not drink excessive amounts of lotus leaf water, as it may disrupt electrolyte balance and cause diarrhea. People who are taking medication should consult a doctor before using lotus leaf water to avoid interfering with the effects of their medication.
