Simple tips to prevent pots from blackening when using a gas stove

1.  Clean Your Pot After Every Use

One of the main reasons pots get blackened on a gas stove is due to leftover grease and food residue. If the pot isn’t cleaned properly after cooking, oil and food particles accumulate and burn during the next use, causing stubborn black stains. Over time, this residue thickens and sticks harder, making cleaning more difficult.

To avoid this, always wash your pots thoroughly after each use to remove all grease and dirt. Keeping your pots clean regularly is the easiest way to prevent blackening.

2.  Check Your Gas Cylinder and Flame

A red or yellow flame on your gas stove can indicate problems with your gas supply. Sometimes, a low or poor-quality gas cylinder causes incomplete combustion, which produces a red flame and leads to pots blackening.

You can check if your gas cylinder is running low by looking at the gauge or shaking it to feel its weight. If the cylinder feels light, it’s time to replace it.

To ensure a clean and blue flame, buy gas cylinders from trusted suppliers and clean your stove regularly. Dirt and grease clogging the gas burner and outlets can also cause flame discoloration and contribute to blackened pots.

3.  Effective Ways to Clean Blackened Pots

Many people use steel wool or abrasive scrubbing pads to clean blackened pots. While these can remove stains quickly, they often scratch the pot’s surface, making it easier for dirt to stick in the future.

Another common method is using baking soda and vinegar: sprinkle baking soda on the pot’s bottom, pour vinegar over it, let it fizz, then scrub. This can help but may not fully remove tough stains.

A highly effective and gentle way is to use dishwashing tablets or powder. Here’s how:

  • Boil some water in a basin.

  • Dissolve one dishwashing tablet or an appropriate amount of dishwashing powder into the boiling water.

  • Soak the pot in this solution.

For light stains, soaking for 1-2 hours is enough. For stubborn burnt marks, soak the pot overnight.

After soaking, scrub the pot gently with a regular dish sponge. The oxygen-based cleaning agents in dishwashing tablets or powder help break down grease and burnt residue without damaging the pot.
