What is this “giant paper clip” on a concrete pillar actually? The truth will surprise everyone!

The red device attached between the concrete pillars in the photo you sent is actually an earthquake brace, commonly known as a "seismic brace" or "earthquake reinforcement brace".

Why does Japan use this device?

Japan is a country located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, so earthquakes often occur. To increase stability and minimize damage when there are vibrations, they install special steel bars (as shown in the photo) between the concrete blocks to:

- Increase the horizontal load-bearing capacity of the pillars.

- Reduce shaking, avoid cracking or collapse due to vibration.

- Connect concrete parts together, helping to disperse force more evenly when there is vibration.

Why is it shaped like a paperclip?

This shape is not only aesthetic but also helps to:

- Distribute force evenly in many directions.

- Easy to construct, quick to assemble between column blocks.

- Reduce costs compared to more complex reinforcement structures.
