Fire Cider — The TikTok Drink Everyone’s Talking About (But Does It Really Work?)

TikTok’s wellness crowd can’t stop hyping fire cider — a fiery mix of apple cider vinegar, garlic, ginger, onions, chili, honey, and herbs that’s supposed to “boost immunity” and “fight colds.”

Sounds like magic in a jar, right?
Not exactly.

Registered dietitian Beth Czerwony, RD, LD says there’s zero scientific proof that fire cider prevents illness — and plenty of reasons your stomach might not thank you for trying it.

🌿 What It Actually Is

Fire cider is a homemade tonic steeped for weeks with:

  • Apple cider vinegar

  • Garlic + ginger + onion + horseradish

  • Cayenne or jalapeño peppers

  • Honey for sweetness

  • Optional add-ins: turmeric, lemon, orange zest, rosemary, elderberries

After a month of soaking, it’s strained, sweetened, and taken in tiny “shots.”

🧠 Does It Have Real Benefits?

Not really.

  • ❌ No studies prove it boosts immunity or prevents flu.

  • 💨 The “clearing sinuses” effect lasts only seconds — it’s just the spice.

  • 🧃 Straining the mixture removes most of the antioxidants and vitamins anyway.

“All those ingredients are healthy on their own,” Czerwony explains, “but mixing and fermenting them this way doesn’t make them more powerful.”

⚠️ Side Effects to Watch Out For

Because it’s acidic and spicy, fire cider can cause:

  • Heartburn or acid reflux

  • Indigestion and diarrhea

  • Tooth enamel erosion

If you’ve got a sensitive stomach, this drink is basically a dare.

💪 Smarter Ways to Stay Healthy

Skip the “miracle shots” and stick to what actually works:

  • Stay hydrated

  • Sleep enough

  • Eat fruits, veggies, and whole foods rich in vitamin C

  • Get vaccinated

  • Quit smoking and manage stress

Fire cider might look good on TikTok — but your gut will thank you for passing on the trend.
