Woman Shocked by Doctor’s Diagnosis After Visiting Hospital for Severe Itching

When she first experienced itching on her legs, the woman assumed it was a skin allergy and bought over-the-counter medication. However, the symptoms did not improve. Only after visiting a hospital did she discover the real cause.

The patient, Ms. Li, from Hangzhou, China, initially thought the itching on her legs was just an allergic reaction. She purchased antihistamines from a nearby pharmacy, but her condition worsened, prompting her to seek medical help.

At the Community Health Service Center, Dr. Li Xiaoqiang, Deputy Director of Internal Medicine, ordered an abdominal scan after listening to her symptoms.

The results revealed abnormalities in her liver, with a high suspicion of cancer. Ms. Li was urgently referred to the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University for further tests. Doctors there confirmed that she had primary liver cancer.

According to China Times, she was admitted immediately and underwent successful surgery to remove the tumor. She is now recovering.

Why liver health matters

The liver plays a vital role in the body, including metabolizing carbohydrates, fats, and proteins; aiding digestion by producing bile and enzymes; detoxifying harmful substances; storing iron and vitamins; and participating in blood formation and clotting.

When liver function declines, visible warning signs often appear on the skin:

Persistent itching or allergies
According to Money Control, increased sensitivity to certain foods, environmental allergens, or chemical smells may signal liver overload. The liver struggles to neutralize toxins and allergens, leading to allergic reactions. This often causes skin itching, particularly on the limbs, palms, and soles. Itching usually worsens at night or when exposed to heat and rough fabrics such as wool.

Skin discoloration (lighter or darker patches)
Only My Health notes that liver disease can cause skin color changes, including lighter or darker patches. These changes may stem from hormonal or enzyme imbalances due to liver dysfunction, such as fatty liver disease, infections, or damage. In some cases, white spots appear, known as “liver spots.”

Since the liver regulates iron metabolism, damaged liver cells can release iron into the bloodstream, darkening or yellowing the skin. Similarly, when the liver fails to clear bilirubin, levels rise, causing jaundice of the skin and eyes.

Easy bruising
The liver produces clotting factors. If damaged, the body lacks proteins essential for blood clotting, leading to frequent bleeding or bruising — a condition known as coagulation disorder.

Puffy eyes and dark circles
Swelling around the eyes and dark under-eye circles can indicate liver issues. While also linked to allergies or lack of sleep, this symptom may point to water retention caused by poor liver function. The under-eye skin often feels especially delicate.

Red palms and spider veins
According to WebMD, damaged liver function may cause spider-like veins to appear on the cheeks, nose, or neck, often linked to cirrhosis. Patients may also develop red palms. Both are common signs of advanced liver disease.
