A Strong Candidate in Cancer Prevention

Garlic — a familiar ingredient in nearly every Vietnamese kitchen — has long been praised for its remarkable health benefits. Modern research continues to affirm its medicinal potential, particularly in reducing the risk of certain cancers.

According to the Department of Clinical Nutrition at K Hospital (Vietnam), garlic is rich in phytochemicals such as flavonoids, inulin, saponins, and S-allyl cysteine. These plant-based compounds have demonstrated anti-cancer properties in laboratory studies, especially in preventing colorectal cancer.

Reports from the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) also suggest that regular garlic consumption may help lower the risk of developing colorectal cancer. Scientists believe this is because the compounds in garlic help repair DNA, slow cancer cell growth, and reduce inflammation — key factors in cancer prevention.

However, experts caution that while evidence is promising, more clinical studies are needed to confirm garlic’s exact role in preventing colorectal and other cancers.

Beyond colorectal cancer, researchers are exploring garlic’s potential effects on breast, stomach, nasopharyngeal, esophageal, prostate, liver, bladder, and pancreatic cancers. Although conclusive results are still pending, current data provides a strong foundation for preventive medicine research.

More Health Benefits of Garlic

According to Dr. Huynh Tan Vu, Department of Traditional Medicine, University Medical Center Ho Chi Minh City (Campus 3), garlic is one of the oldest and most widely used natural antioxidants.

In addition to its anti-cancer potential, garlic can:

  • Lower cholesterol and blood pressure

  • Boost immunity

  • Improve blood circulation

  • Slow down skin aging

“Garlic, when used correctly, contributes to disease prevention and enhances public health,” Dr. Vu emphasized.

How to Use Garlic for Maximum Benefits

Experts recommend using fresh garlic or crushing/chopping it and letting it sit for 10–15 minutes before cooking. This allows the enzymes to activate and form allicin, the key compound responsible for most of garlic’s health benefits.

Additionally, pickled garlic (garlic soaked in vinegar) can also promote heart health by improving lipid metabolism and blood vessel function.

Important Precautions

While garlic has powerful medicinal properties, it’s not suitable for everyone. Its strong odor can cause nausea or discomfort for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy. In such cases, garlic should be used sparingly or avoided.

Doctors also stress that garlic is not a cure for cancer.
Dr. Nguyen Thi Diem Huong, from the University Medical Center (Campus 3), warns that patients should not rely on folk remedies, herbal concoctions, or single-food “miracle cures” like eating large amounts of garlic to treat cancer.

Instead, patients should follow standard medical treatments — such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and targeted therapy — to ensure safety and effectiveness.

In summary, garlic is a powerful ally for overall health — it may help lower blood fat, regulate blood pressure, and reduce cancer risk when used properly. Still, it should be seen as a complement to a balanced diet and modern medicine, not a substitute for medical treatment.
