1. Chocolate
Chocolate is a favorite treat for many, but storing it in the fridge is a common mistake. The cold temperature and high humidity cause the sugar in chocolate to melt and then recrystallize as the moisture evaporates, forming an unattractive "white bloom" on the surface. Furthermore, when removed from the fridge, condensation can cause the chocolate to lose its flavor and quickly become moldy or spoiled.
Proper storage: Keep chocolate in a dry, cool place with a temperature between 5 - 18°C (41–64°F).
2. Potatoes
To prevent potatoes from sprouting, many people put them in the fridge. However, this actually has the opposite effect. The cold temperature causes the starch in potatoes to convert into sugar, and when fried or baked, these sugars can form acrylamide — a compound suspected of being harmful to health.
Proper storage: Store potatoes in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. This will help preserve them and prevent sprouting.
3. Dried Nuts (Cashews, Almonds, Walnuts, etc.)
Some people think refrigerating dried nuts will help them last longer, but in reality, this is a mistake. The cold and moist environment can cause nuts to become moldy.
